CMPC mentorship

For Mental Performance Consultants aiming to do this work sustainably.

At Build Better Humans, we offer mentorship for aspiring and early-career mental performance consultants who want to grow their skills, find their footing, and build a career they can actually maintain.

Let us help you ride the waves of the industry.

A note on creating a sustainable career…

We believe it’s possible to care deeply and earn a good living without burning out. Mental performance consulting shouldn’t require self-sacrifice to make ends meet.

While this mentorship focuses on applied practice and professional growth, it also holds space for real conversations about workload, energy, boundaries, and sustainability. Because a healthy field needs healthy practitioners.

See what past mentees have to say about working with us.

  • I loved the flexible structure of our sessions, starting one one topic but if something else came up that we deemed more important we’d move to that and so on! It made the sessions feel very natural and allowed for the best use of our time.”
  • “There’s a time for everything, and [they are] really good at knowing when is the right time to push and when is the right time to be softer.

This mentorship is for you if you are:

The problem isn’t passion. It’s support. Too many Certified Mental Performance Consultants (CPMCs) enter the field with good intentions and strong care for athletes.

But they’re often left to figure out everything else on their own. They’re trained to help others, but not trained to survive in the real world. They love the work, but can’t make a living doing it. They’re underpaid, overextended, and stretched thin. Many burn out or leave the field entirely.

When the helpers burn out, everyone loses. Athletes lose support. Families lose trust. The field loses good people.

That’s not a personal failure. It’s a systems problem.

Mentorship at Build Better Humans is practical, relational, and grounded in real work. It can include:

This isn’t about telling you who to be. It’s about helping you become more confident in how you work.

We’ve been there. We’ve lived this work from multiple sides: as athletes, as coaches, as practitioners. We’ve felt the pressure to have all the answers. We’ve seen what happens when consultants are expected to fix things alone.

And we’ve watched talented people leave the field because the path wasn’t sustainable.

We built mentorship differently. Not as a box to check — but as real support, for real humans, doing real work.

Frequently asked questions

CMPC stands for Certified Mental Performance Consultant. It’s the professional certification offered through the Canadian Sport Psychology Association and the Association for Applied Sport Psychology. The certification recognizes advanced training in mental performance, ethics, and the ability to work with performers in many contexts.

In short, you need a graduate degree in a related field, then to complete a 400-hour internship and a 50-hour mentorship, and pass a certification exam. It’s a rigorous process by design and takes multiple years from start to finish. We’ll help you understand what applies to your situation and what your next step should be.

This mentorship is for

  • CMPC candidates who are close to or have completed the required undergraduate and graduate coursework and are ready to begin practical hours
  • Candidates who are already completing their practical hours and want structured, thoughtful mentorship
  • Early-career practitioners who want continued mentorship while building a sustainable practice

CMPC certification requires a minimum of 50 hours of mentorship. There are a minimum of 10 direct knowledge hours, a minimum of 20 direct hours, and a maximum of 20 group hours. These hours are completed alongside your applied work and are designed to support both competence and ethical practice.

If you’ve completed most of your coursework and are asking yourself, “Okay, what’s next?”, you’re probably close. Booking a call is the best way to clarify readiness. For full details, the CMPC handbook is the official source.

Most mentees meet biweekly or monthly, depending on their package and goals. Sessions often include a mix of individual and group mentorship.

Most mentorship happens virtually, which allows for consistency and access. In some cases, sessions may happen in person depending on circumstances.

Sessions can include case discussions, applied tools, ethics, boundaries, reflection, feedback, and deeper conversations about why you do the work the way you do.

Logging hours is the mentee’s responsibility, since you submit them for certification. That said, we also track hours on our end and confirm them when it’s time for your defence.

Yes, of course! Like any professional relationship, we use a written agreement to clarify expectations, roles, and responsibilities. This protects both the mentor and the mentee.

Yes. Up to 20 group mentorship hours can count toward the required 50 hours. Group mentorship is built into our packages, and you’ll move through the program with the same cohort to build trust and continuity.

We are a group of mentors who align on the overarching mission, vision, and values, but bring different styles and approaches to our work. This exposes mentees to multiple ways effective service can look.

We also care about quality work and sustainable careers, not just checking boxes. We CHASE mentees who have a bias toward curiosity, honesty, ambition, service, and striving for excellence.

We’re a full-cycle ecosystem. Our mentorship arm feeds our service arm, and when the fit is right, we hire from within. We want to see you succeed so much that we hire some of you!

Yes. We are viscerally aware of these ideas… We have lived burnout and poor boundaries ourselves. Sustainability became a core part of our mentorship philosophy because we learned the hard way that good work cannot exist without it. We rose from the ashes of our scorched cocoon as flying butterflies.

Business support is part of our mentorship offering because great service and sustainable business go hand in hand. We also offer business support as a standalone service for those who’ve completed the mentorship hours required for certification, because we know mentorship doesn’t really end!
